Ingredients

– 2½ cups all-purpose flour – 1½ cups sugar – 1 tsp baking soda – 1 tsp cocoa powder – 1 tsp salt – 2 large eggs – 1½ cups vegetable oil – 1 cup buttermilk – 2 tbsp red food coloring – 1 tsp vanilla extract – 1 tsp white vinegar

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans. Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa, and salt into a large bowl.

In another bowl, whisk eggs, oil, buttermilk, food coloring, vanilla, and vinegar until fully blended. Slowly add to dry mix while stirring.

Beat the mixture on medium speed until smooth and consistent. Don’t overmix. Divide evenly between the two prepared pans.

Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

While cakes cool, prepare your favorite cream cheese frosting. Ensure cakes are completely cooled before frosting to avoid melting.

Layer cakes with frosting in between, then coat the top and sides. Chill for an hour before serving to let flavors set beautifully.
