Southern Buttermilk Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients

– 2 cups all-purpose flour – 1 tbsp baking powder – 1/2 tsp baking soda – 1 tsp salt – 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter (cubed) – 3/4 cup cold buttermilk – 1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prepare for baking the biscuits.

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until fully combined with no lumps remaining.

Cut cold butter into the flour using a pastry cutter or fork until mixture looks like coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter bits.

Pour in cold buttermilk and gently stir until a rough dough forms. Do not overmix; it's okay if the dough is slightly shaggy.

Turn dough out onto a floured surface, gently pat into a rectangle, then fold in thirds. Repeat folding once more for flakier layers.

Pat dough to 1-inch thickness, then use a round cutter to shape biscuits. Place close together on the baking sheet for soft sides.

Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown. Remove and brush warm biscuits with melted butter before serving. Enjoy them fresh!
